35 years of wedded bliss

Me on our wedding day.

Murray and I are celebrating 35 years of marriage on this
August 6.

Our wedding party ~ Brian, Margaret (my sister), Darrell, me, Murray, Lois and Bev
The ring bearer is my nephew, John.  I think he was 4.

We were married at Mactaquac Baptist Church on a humid partly cloudy Saturday afternoon by Rev. Ralph Irving
with about 100 family members and friends present.

Did you notice the styles we wore back then?  The platform shoes, hair, snazzy tuxes and oh those glasses!
I still like the bridesmaid's dresses and the bouquets.

How much was my dress?  $129.00 on sale in the spring.
But it was more for a winter wedding and was a heavy jersey
knit and very hot.  I was on a limited budget and I think we did
the wedding for about $1000.00.  Not many weddings cost that
little today.  The brides dresses cost more than that.

Our reception was in the church's new gymnasium with it's
grey cement walls.  We decorated with green and yellow
streamers and bells and there were garden flowers in vases
on the guests tables.  The Women's Missionary Society served
a lovely salad plate dinner and we had wedding cake for dessert.

What do I remember about that day?
Wishing my Dad was there (he passed away in 1969).
The fly buzzing about my face as I repeated my vows.
 The heat and humidity.
The photographer couldn't take our photos outside at the park
as it was too breezy.  I was disappointed.
The toast to the bride was given by our friend who brought me
a piece of toast in a paper bag.   :)
Murray's friends kidnapped him when we were ready to leave
for our honeymoon ~ for over an hour!!  I was upset.
The long drive to St. Andrew's for our honeymoon.

My mother, and Murray's parents with us.

Sorry for the poor picture quality.  It is 35 years old after all.

This photo above was back at our house after the reception.  It's one of my favourite pictures.  {and we still live in the same house!}

How that house has changed.  It's been painted,
re-sided, windows and roof replaced, new floors, rooms, etc.

It has seen 2 adults grow and mature in love and has seen
2 wonderful children grow up.  It has sheltered us through
many storms of weather and life.

The best part is that we were united in marriage before our God.
We made a vow and a committment that day to love, honour,
and cherish til death do us part.
I'm not saying it's been all roses.
Roses, despite their beauty, have thorns.
But, God has carried us through day by day and year by year.

Did you wonder where we went for our honeymoon?

We drove to St. Andrews and stayed for two nights at the
luxurious Algonquin Hotel.  (with no air conditioning!)

This was a few years ago in front of the Algonquin Hotel.

We then drove to New Hampshire and the White Mountains where
almost every newly wed couple from the Maritimes went for
their honeymoons back in the day.
We toured around there for several days then drove to Ottawa,
Ontario to Murray's sister as she was expecting her baby and
couldn't attend the wedding.

I remember on our way home we stopped at a restaurant near
Edmonston NB.  As we were getting out of the car we heard the announcement on the radio that Elvis Presley had passed away.  That was Aug. 16, 1977.

I also remember being called in to work before my vacation
and honeymoon were over!

Sept. 2011

Unfortunately, we can't be together for our anniversary
to celebrate.  Can you believe that I am 3000 miles away
from my dearly beloved?
We will celebrate later in the fall with a little getaway.

God has blessed our family to include a great son-in-law and 2 precious grandsons so far.  :-)

I can't imagine life without my partner, lover and best friend.
Lord willing, we will be blessed with many more years of
wedded bliss.

Blessings,

Pamela

  12. Happy Anniversary Pamela & Murray. My first wedding was in 1972 and I wore a similar dress to you, sadly we only had 24 years together before he passed away, but like you we have two wonderful children and three grandchildren who are a blessing and joy, although Colin only knew the first one who is 18 now.I have been lucky to remarry to another great husband for 10 years now and he gets on well with my children and grandchildren.
It is a shame you are not together but I know it is for a very special reason. Hope all is going well for you at your daughters and that you are all getting some sleep. Nice to know when you go home Murray will be waiting for you and you can celebrate your 35 years together and the many more to come. God bless, Jackie in Surrey, UK.xx

  13. Happy Anniversary Pamela! I found your blog listed over at Cabin & Cottage. I absolutely love this post honoring 35 years of marriage. You speak so well of your husband too after all these years. You and Murray obviously took your vows seriously were determined to make it work. You are both great examples for couples today.

I think $1000 to spend on a wedding is perfect. What many brides spend today is more like a down payment on a house.

I wish you and Murray many more happy years together!

  17. Happy Anniversary!

I so enjoyed reading your wedding story and seeing the photos. Are you still angry with his friends? It made me a little angry for you. LOL!

Have good times out there with the new grandbaby and your little grandson. It's wonderful to think about the way God has knitted families together.

  21. Thanks for sharing your wonderful wedding memories Pamela, and congratulations on your 35 th anniversary. Better to have a fall getaway together anyway when it will be cooler.
I'm sure you can guess where most newlyweds in Ontario go -Niagara Falls. We didn't go there for an anniversary trip until years later.

  22. Oh, Pam, how I have loved looking at those photos, especially Clara and Douglas. You were a beautiful bride. The last time I can remember seeing Douglas was in 1970 just before I moved to England. Murray looked (and still does look!!)just the same as I remember him when we were kids. Happy, happy anniversary. x

  32. Happy Anniversary Pamela how truly blessed you are. what a wonderful legacy you've both left for the future generation. The best part of your whole story is about how you said were united in marriage before your God and that you
made a vow and a committment that day to love, honour,
and cherish til death do you part( and you meant it). Not many marriages stand by that today.
Man I would have been ticked when his friends took him away.. you are such an angel to have waited for him.... I prob would have went on the honeymoon without him..... LOL
Many more blessings to come from a wonderful loving God that only has the best for his beloved....

  35. Congratulations Pamela! This milestone will last a year so you will have plenty of time to celebrate once you're home again. I'm sure you must be enjoying the time spent with your daughter and her family and the latest addition to their family. i enjoyed seeing the styles and colours of 1977. We were married in September of 78 and i had just one maid of honour who wore a dress so similar to your bridesmaids dresses.
