gobble gobble gobble

It's turkey time.

Just in time for Thanksgiving dinner.

{our Canadian Thanksgiving is next weekend}

And a bonus.

One for Christmas dinner too!

These wild turkeys have been in our area all

summer.  This is the first I've seen them and finally I captured them (on my camera) Friday afternoon.

My neighbour has seen them this summer in

the field across the road.

I've been carrying my camera with me on my

walks in hopes of capturing them.

There they were on Friday afternoon just strutting across the field and eating.

They are quite fat aren't they?

I really hope nobody decides to shoot them.

I don't know if there is a turkey hunting season

here or not.  Turkeys have been seen in this part

of New Brunswick the past couple years.

The are coming over the border from Maine.

I wonder if they are carrying their passports?!

September is almost a memory and October

will give us a bounty of blessings to remember

with thanksgiving.  There will be lots of colour

for a another week or two and maybe some nice

warm days to savour.

a perfectly gorgeous fall day

Friday was a perfectly gorgeous fall day.

It was sunny and there was no wind.

The temperature was in the mid-teens.

{that's celsius}

There is a lot of colour coming in the trees now.

This morning I played around with a table scape

which I will show you next week.

Then I went for a nice walk.

And enjoyed the beautiful scenery.

When you go for a walk do you listen to music?

I don't.  I don't want anything to intrude on

the beauty around me.

I also like to take time to pray while I'm walking.

Do you do that too?

On my way back I stopped in at our son's house

and checked on the dogs.  

I give them a little treat or two every day

at noon time and visit with them.

Marshall, in the picture, used to live with us.

He is almost totally blind and deaf at 13 but

he still has a lot of life in him.

{he just has to stop running into things like cars!}

Poor old Marshall.  I love that dog!

Murray arrived home late afternoon after 

working away all week.  :)

Near supper time, while he was mowing the lawn, I did a bit of garden clean up and

cut some pretty hydrangea blossoms to add

to the old milk can.

 This is the same spot I took a photo on Monday

morning when it was foggy.

The sun is low in the western sky at supper time

creating long shadows.

Actually, there are longer shadows all day

long now as the sun lays closer to the south.

It was a beautiful day.

{and it's going to rain for the next three days!}

I hope your weekend has some sunshine if you

need it or perhaps some much needed rain.

Friday's fence and a problem {solved}

This picture was taken a week ago on one of

fall's foggy mornings.  The fence surrounds a

pasture and borders a field lane.

This is the unused gate to the pasture.

It's looking quite dilapidated now but still

has some character to it with it's weathered

boards and posts.

Now.  I have a problem.  

I have a new computer.

It's a Mac.

That's not the problem!

The problem is

 I don't know how to link this post to 

Friday's Fences.

There is so much to learn about this computer

and how it works.  It is very different from

a PC.

Don't get me wrong.

I love it and it's a laptop so I can use it anywhere

in the house and even on the deck!

I just have to work out a few things.

{and learn a LOT of things}

So, please bear with me.

I'll put up this post with no link.

Just the pictures and me complaining.

a kissing bridge

New Brunswick is known for it's historic

covered bridges.

This bridge is in the community of Rusagonis.

Rusagonis is locally pronounced 

Rush - a - gornish.

Yeah, I don't know how they got that sound out

of it either.  :)  The community is also known

simply as "The Gornish".

There is a nice little park at the intersection near the covered bridge.

This bridge is the Patrick Owens Bridge.  

It is 103 years old.

You can see that this bridge is well cared for

as it is used everyday.  You will note in the

first photo that their is a height restriction on

this bridge with the yellow and black painted

steel girder.  

I love the architecture inside a covered bridge.

It's almost like a cathedral.

There is only room for one vehicle to travel

through these old covered bridges.  

It is common courtesy to wait on one side

until the vehicle entering the other side

comes through.

And the title 'kissing bridge'?  Well,

in days of yore when a couple would be 

crossing the bridge in their buggy it is known

that many kisses were exchanged in the privacy

of the bridge.

This is the pretty river that flows under

the Patrick Owens Covered Bridge in the

pretty rural community of Rusagonis.

I hope you enjoyed seeing this pretty bridge.

the apple farm

Sunday afternoon was perfect for a walk down

through the apple orchards.

Hundreds of bins waiting to be filled.

An old wooden ladder to reach the 

highest apples in the trees.

That's my hubby walking through a field that

once grew oats when he was a kid.

Now there are hundreds of apple trees.

Mmmmmm....apples.

An apple picking container.

This is an old photo of my father-in-law

picking apples in the original orchard.

This was probably taken in the 1930's

or 1940's when he was a young man.

Note that they used baskets to

collect the apples in and then they were

put into wooden barrels.

I love this photo.  I don't know who

took it but they had a good 'eye'.

It's a long walk from the bottom to the top.

This is only the half way mark.

When we got to the top we picked a large

bag of Cortland apples.  

It was so great to get out and enjoy the

beauty of the apple farm and nature.

happy fall

The trees haven't changed into their autumn

colours yet but the apples are ready to pick.

It's the season of changing colours in nature.

The trees will cloak themselves in shades of

red, yellow, orange, gold and brown.

The grasses will wither and fade and the first frost will blacken the summer's blooms.

The birds will gather on fences, in trees and on

power lines as they prepare for the long flight

south for the winter.

Smoke will rise from chimneys and the delicious

smell of woodsmoke will draw one indoors

to be warmed by the fire.

The geese will gather and form their 'V' formation

honking overhead as they head in a southerly

direction.

We'll don sweaters, jackets, gloves and boots to

keep us warm from the biting winds that will come.

We'll also enjoy those beautiful crisp sunny days

when Indian summer arrives and the air is a

bit warmer for just a few more days.

Autumn is a beautiful season.

I will try to get out and enjoy it as much as

I can.  And, I will take pictures.

Do you see it?

On the third post in the center of the photo.

It wouldn't stay still for a picture.

It was a foggy morning.

The grasses in the pasture are brown.

There is a hint of colour in the trees.

I love the contrast of the green grass, dark

brown weeds and brown grass.

a walk on the wild side

Blue Asters

Even though it's almost autumn there are

still lots of wild flowers blooming.

White Asters

I enjoy seeing what is blooming along

the road while on my walks and I found

these beautiful asters recently.

This looks like sedum.  I don't know if there is a wild variety or not.

Do any of you gardeners know what this is?

Wild apples

There are lots of wild apple trees growing

along the road too.

Wild cranberries

This apple dropped from the tree and was pierced on a thorn.

There are lots of cattails in the ditches.  I cut some for the milk can on the front deck.

A doe and fawn crossing the road.

I saved this for the last.

How's this for a wasp's nest!  It is huge.  I don't know how we'll get rid of it and it's residents.  It's up pretty high.  It's at our son's house.

He's found ground nests this years too.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

We thought we'd wait until it's very cold (which won't be until late October or November and

the wasps are sleeping then spray it with

wasp spray.  We'd then have to get a ladder

and try to take it down. 

It's going to be quite the procedure as it's on the

second floor of the house.

So, tell me, what have you seen in the wild

lately?  Do you get out for walks or drives in

the countryside?  Do you take note of the

changes in the fall flora along the way?

I hope you are having a good week and that

maybe you will get out and enjoy the beauty

that is around you.

Oh!  If you have any suggestions for getting

rid of a hornet's nest safely I'd appreciate them.

which apple would you pick?

It's apple picking season again.

This orchard is near our home.  In fact,

my husband grew up on this land when it

was a dairy farm and a small orchard.

His father planted some of the trees and the

next two owners planted hundreds more.

What is your favorite apple?

Just a couple of the many varieties in this

orchard.

Oh.  The deer apples are drops.  The ones

that fall off the tree.  Hunters get them to lure

the deer.  Sad but true.

A large red wagon pulled by a tractor takes

you down the hill to pick your favorite apples. 

It would be quite a long walk up the hill with

your bags of apples.  

And you just might meet Ducky....

who has his own wagon to ride in.
