glorious red

As promised....
I thought I'd share with you my amaryllis in full bloom.  All four buds opened up on Saturday.

I love how the light shows through the petals.
Stunning!

And there was a bonus to this.
Something unusual.

I used 4 dogwood twigs to make a 'fence' around
the amaryllis to keep it from falling over.

You can see it a bit in this photo.

Well, imagine my surprise to see some of the old leaf buds on one of the dogwood starting to swell and bloom.  There are five of them.

See the tiny leaves?  I'm not sure what the green cluster is.  Perhaps a bloom?  I will let it grow and see what happens and let you know too.

I had this happen one other time.  I put some dogwood sticks that I had cut in November into a vase of water in March and basically forced them to grow buds.

The temperatures have moderated considerably this morning.  It was -18C at 7:00 am and now
at noon it is -3C.  Going to hit zero this afternoon.
It's just a tease though.  This happens once or twice a winter here for a day or three then it's back to normal cold and snow.
I'll enjoy it while it lasts though.

Have a great day!!

Blessings,

Pamela

  1. I swear I would crack like an icicle in your weather! But what a wonderful way to keep nature going. A thrill when the amaryllis opens, but I love the budding dogwood too! I wonder what I can bring in!

  3. Wow it is colder, I"m going to be so sorry when I return home and I can't get adjusted. I was just talking about that yesterday how I miss the snow and what will happen because I skipped two seasons, oh well we will find out. You brought a smile to my face as Santa brought me a new camera to play with this Christmas and the first picture I took was of a dogwood bud, it is amazing and I wish I could share it with you but I can't embed a pic into a comment. I might have posted it somewhere let me see, I'll be right back....found it http://besidethetrail.ca/hatsnhospitalitea/bliss/heading-sout/ now I know that it is dogwood, thanks

  17. Gorgeous bloom Pamela and I love the bud on the Dogwood! I saved my Amaryllis from last year. Stored it in the cold basement. It was having nice growth so I brought it up before Christmas. All I have gotten it tall, tall greens. So when I was at Target the other day I bought another bulb that was clearanced. Hoping it blooms for Valentines.
    Hugs,
    Jann
