It's a new year!

A very old card with a new year sentiment and inside it says Merry Christmas.  It has leftover bits of "A wee sprig o' heather frae the bonnie hills o' Gallowa' "  glued inside.

It is signed "From D Smith with best wishes".  My grandmother was from Scotland and the card was hers.

Happy New Year!

We woke up on January 1 to clear blue skies and very cold temperatures and it was -24C.

a beautiful but cold January 1, 2014

We had a fun New Year's Eve here.  Four of our friends came over for dinner and each couple contributed something to the menu.  After we dined we played a game of Mexican Train Dominoes until 11:00 then waited until midnight for the new year.  We watched some of the show from Niagara Falls on TV.  Niagara Falls is one hour behind us so we didn't really see the celebration end there at 1:00 our time.

Today we woke up to find this temperature on the thermometer.  Minus 30C.  Brrrr.

That is just too cold for me.  We haven't ventured far this week.  We got groceries Tuesday morning and today we visited our friends who have just moved back to our community from the city.  That's it.  I haven't even been shopping for any after Christmas bargains.
It's just. too. cold.
But, I've been spending some time visiting around in blogland after getting way behind.

On Monday Murray cleared the snow from the garage roof.  It was about 3 feet deep on the back side of it.  He also cleared the house roof yesterday  for the second time in less than two weeks.  In a normal winter we might clear the roof once in January or February.  We have a lot of snow down.  I heard we got 90cm. in December.

A northwest wind picked the fluffy snow up and blew it around yesterday afternoon.  Looks pretty and cold doesn't it?

I LOVE these vintage bottle brush wreaths.

Have you taken your Christmas decorations down yet?  I have most things down and put away but left the tree up to enjoy the lights for another night or two.  I think Saturday will be the day so Murray can help me pack the tree up.   It's such a big job and makes me kind of sad that the season is over.
But, I'm also ready for a clean uncluttered look.
Well, clean at least.

I hope you are staying warm and cozy if it's cold where you are.   Did you know it's about 76 days until spring?  Hopeful.  :)

Blessings,

Pamela

  1. Brrrrrr....oh my gosh, I don't think I could bear that temp. My decorations will come this weekend I think. Love your snow photo. And love to hear of old cards and your Scottish mother. My mother's ancestors are from Ireland and dad's are from England. What a heritage we all must have. Carol

  2. That is a really nice card that's been saved from your Gramma. I love that first picture of your snow it looks so cold and crisp. I am amazed at the amount of snow on the roof. Wow. We in BC lower mainland are suffering with only rain, I could not imagine how I would be able to live in snow country.
All our decorations are still up although I think I'll start to take some down before work tomorrow.

  3. It may be 'sooo cold'...but it is sooo pretty! I remember having one of those bottle brush wreaths.

It sounds like you had a delightful New Years Eve. We watched the countdown in Niagara Falls...delayed to co-incide with midnight over here. Before that we had dinner with friends...and watched Mandela : Long Walk to Freedom (a good movie). Happy New Year!

  4. Yes it has been cold here as well, this morning it was only -23C, you are colder. Like you I have spent most of indoors on the computer. Christmas has left and the house is bare:) Enjoy the rest of the week and stay warm. Jen

  5. Happy New Year, Pamela! The snow is so beautiful where you live but I think I feel the chill! :) Here's to another year of blogging with you.
    Be a sweetie,

  6. I too am hiding from the cold by not straying any further than the grocery store. I go out as little as possible... still have decorations to take down and put away too.... I'm being lazy.....

  7. Boy, you've got colder temperatures and moresnow than we do!

  8. Oh my...does it make you nervous when Murray is up on the roof like that? Growing up in southern California and then moving to the Seattle area we really have had rare years of dealing with snow at all let alone a lot of snow.
My Christmas is all put away and the tree is all cut up in the yard waste bin...
Mexican train has been played several times here at the kitchen table this past month! Blessings...

  9. Happy New Year, Pamela. What a sweet card you are sharing with us.
Wow, that is a LOT of snow. It sure is pretty.
Sounds like a fun way to ring in the new year with your friends. I had never heard of Mexican train dominoes until I started blogging. I have yet to play it, but it seems everyone says it's a lot of fun.
The decorations are still standing here at our house. Hopefully by the end of the weekend they will be back in the attic.

  10. Only 76 days?
    Piece of cake, Pam!
I don't think your snow will melt by then!
We are snowing and frigid here as well...
    Stay warm!
    Cheers!

  11. You got a lot of snow! We got a measly inch today. The temps are diving, though. Monday's high is supposed to be 9 degrees. That's pretty cold for KY. Our tree and all of the decorations came down yesterday.

  12. Oh brrrrrr. That's really cold. But so very pretty. I'd be happy to stay cozy indoors and look out the window with a cup of tea or hot chocolate to hand.
Haven't played Mexican Train for a long time. Fun game and a fun way to bring in the new year.

    Happy 2014, Pam!

  13. Your snow does look pretty, but frozen! That is really, really cold. I bet you are using lots of hand cream, etc. Stay warm! Such a neat card!

  14. Oh Pamela, what a wonderful card!! Love your photos, even though it's too cold! We are getting the coldest weather ever here coming our way, but still only a flurry of snow. We had several years of 18-20" almost every weekend for the whole winter but have missed all the snow except for a dusting in November. I'm not looking forward to the extreme cold either. Will be 7 Monday. Thank you for always stopping by and for your beautiful photos:-)

  15. What a lovely memento!

We don't have as much snow here in my part of Ontario, but our temps are much the same. Happy New Year, and stay warm!

  16. Now there's good news - 76 days until spring - though I don't want to rush it. We are having a lot of rain - very typical for us - and we need the snowpack on the mountains, so that is good too. Our tree is down - it is nice to have things back to normal, less clutter. On to the new year and all that comes our way.

  17. We are having about the same temps as you are but we don't have as much snow. I'm not even attempting to go out in it. It is supposed to warm up to about 12 above tomorrow and Sat and then get even colder next week than it has been. brrr
I took down my tree but have left some of the winter greenery up. Just getting the tree down made the house look a lot less cluttered.

  18. Happy new year! We don't live too far from Galloway. In fact we are further north!

  19. I LOVE to play Mexican Train Dominoes! Have played for years with my family (I am 61) but they all live far from me now.

  20. It made me smile to see that you are already counting the days down till spring. Meanwhile I think I'll enjoy the good parts about winter and try to minimize the bad. :))

  21. BRRRRRRRRR BRRRRRRRR BRRRRRRRR does not begin to cover it I suspect. I am freezing cold just looking at your pictures!! I hope that you stay as warm as you can and that you stay safe. I hope that Murray is not to worn out from all that snow clearing. We watched a TV show a few years ago about a man who clears snow off roofs in Yellowstone Park all winter long and it looked like very hard work. We are taking our decorations down this weekend too! Happy weekend! xx

  22. You certainly have the snow and cold! I hope Murray is careful up on that roof! Great photos . . .
(I am in the process of undressing the house from Christmas. Boxes and Bins all over the place!

  23. The tree is providing the only bit of cheer there be in this fierce cold. Tuesday will be the day it comes down. John had to clear our roofs. We have two distinct ones on the house. I hate to see him climb up there! Accckkk...

Your New Year's Eve sounded very festive and fun!

Stay warm and cozy...drink lots of tea!

  24. What a special old card.
That's a lot of snow, Pamela! I can see why Murray is shoveling your roof.
We have had -37 several days this week and last-I've had enough...
I wish Spring meant green grass and flowers, but here it's June before we see that!

  25. Happy New Year! My tree is still up too. Maybe I'll get it down before Monday rolls around. Our forecast shows 5 degrees F next week. That is very cold for north Alabama. Stay warm!

  26. Keep warm, Pamela! Looks so cold but beautiful.

  31. Yeah 76 days until spring!! THanks for the update!!! I hope you shovel out soon !

  32. It's actually milder here today, after a very cold spell, but it sounds like more snow is coming tomorrow. I would say it doesn't compete with the amount you get! As for Christmas decorations, mine are almost all gone, except for a couple of plants and such. I think I`ll take down the wreath on the door soon, maybe the 6th or 7th. There is that part of me that likes things getting back to "normal".

  33. Yikes, 30 below! I think I would just still put until spring, LOL. Take care and stay warm! Yes, we have all the decorations put away. I kept out my "SNOW" word in the great room. I'll take it down at the end of February.

  34. Hi Pamela,
Baby it's cold out there! I've done a lot of the same stayed inside and asked others if they found any after Christmas specials that I missed out on only because it is too cold to venture out. I so wish I had one of my grandmothers cards, so lucky you are and it is a nice card.. Is her hand writing inside? I had my last tea of the season yesterday and I had little bits of decorations left here and there and it was time to get it all put away so yes, I'm boxed up for another year. If you look at it that way Spring isn't that far away, lol
