sledding in the orchard ~ Sunlit Sunday

We went to visit our neighbour's orchard on Saturday afternoon as he hosted a sliding party as a community event.

It was a gorgeous sunny January day and even though the temperature was -13C, if you were dressed warmly it was bearable.  There was no wind, thankfully.  A perfect afternoon.

Some of the sledders walking over to the hill.

People waiting to go down the hill.  I didn't join them.  I was there to take photos and get some fresh air in the sunshine as I hadn't been out anywhere other than the grocery store on New Year's Eve and our friend's yesterday as it was just. too. cold!

When you were done and came back up the hill on the wagon, you could walk up to the barn, get warm by the fire and enjoy hot chocolate, apple cider and hot dogs.

A nice hot fire of apple wood.

One of the older apple trees in the orchard.

I'm so glad we got outdoors to enjoy the sunshine on this cold January day.

I'm joining Karen at "My Little Home and Garden" for Sunlit Sunday.
Karen runs this meme every year to bring a little sunshine into our long winter months from January to March.  If you'd like to join in just go to her link above for her instructions.  I hope you will either join in or just pop over and visit the other participants.

I hope you're enjoying the weekend.
You can get out and enjoy the sunshine even when it's well below freezing!

Thanks for stopping by and I'd like to welcome to my new followers.

Blessings,

Pamela

  1. That looks like a great way to spend a sunny winter day! It has been quite a winter so far ~ we may have been spoiled the last few years.
Happy New Year to you and your family!

  2. This is what I like to see, someone embracing winter and seeing the delights it can offer! It must have been a fun time for the sledders (and a certain photographer). The brightly coloured clothing, not to mention the bright blue tractor and red wagon, look so cheery against the white snow.

Thank you for participating in Sunlit Sunday again this year, Pamela, and for extending the invitation to all those who read your blog.

    Have a wonderful week.

  3. Other than for errands I haven't been outside for any fresh air but enjoyed seeing the fun you photographed.
It started snowing tonight, what else is new?

  4. The snow just adds to the bright and cheery photos you share. Love all the colors of the winter garb! It looks like a really neat thing for your friend to do.

  5. Oh you brave, frozen souls! Still, it must have felt wonderful to get out and enjoy fresh air. (I have not been out for two weeks. TWO! Unbelievable.)

  6. That looks like so much fun Pamela...but oh soooo cold and I myself haven't ventured too far except to the market to fill up the fridge. The orchards are beautiful no matter what time of year and what a neat thing to do during the winter. I used to manage a gift shop at an apple orchard in Southern Maine for a couple of years and there is nothing more beautiful than walking through the lines of apple trees in the Fall. What fun.

  8. Such a fun way to spend the day out in the sunshine. Great neighbour! Sledding wouldn't be for me but the fire and apple cider would be lovely.

  9. Look at that sunshine . . . the sledding sounds like fun but I might have opted for photographs too! We are in a wintery storm watch right now. Sure has been a snowy few months!

  12. oh my! I think that would have been too cold for me. I love the brightness of all the colorful people against the snow. Brilliant images.

  13. Pamela, it was like being there without the cold weather, thank you again for sharing your beauty through your pictures. It sounded like a fantastic day, you could have handed someone your camera and taken a ride down that hill, next time.

  14. What a perfect winter January day! If I was there I would so be on a sled and down the next hill! Sounds like you have some great neighbours.

  15. Looks like great fun. It is cold here, too. A bit of snow with more on the way. I will be staying in by the fire. Ave a good week.

  16. Love the sunshine, Pamela! Fresh air is GOOD as long as it's not too cold. ;)

  17. The red barn and the fire look like the best place to be in those temps Pamela!!!
Beautiful scenery though - your pics are lovely - and getting out in the pure, fresh air is good one's constitution. Saying that, why am I not doing it, shame on me who even has Antarctic expedition clothing packed away but waiting to be utilized again, haha!

Have now taken down all decorations except the gazebo tree outside - will be out there today for that as we are expecting much colder weather this coming week.............I'd like t least a dusting of snow please.

    Hugs - Mary

  18. That looks like a lot of fun but I would be with you, Pam. I'd be there to take pictures and enjoy the fire and the hot chocolate! I am really getting to be a wimp about getting out in the cold.

  19. How fun is that?? I'd probably just take photos too. We have minus 22 this morning with a horrible windchill factor predicted. We'll be staying in. We're both still coughing a lot.

  21. That would be fun! The cold is more bearable when you're actually doing something. It's been a long time since I've been sledding. We used to ride snow mobiles in Michigan.

  22. That looks like it was a fun community event and a beautiful sunny day for it as well. The refreshments and apple wood fire would have been a highlight in the cold too.

  24. What a great idea! I love neighbour get togethers...we have been blessed with wonderful neighbours here as well! Glad you got out to enjoy the day...no wind makes such a huge difference. We are sitting at -30 temps here today! Brrr..... Stay warm my Canadian friend!!

I'm afraid I've been hibernating lately...
It was truly a beautiful day there, Pamela.

  28. What a wonderful post for this theme. Sunshine and fresh air and community fun. Can't beat that. We have not had quite enough snow for sledding although we had enough to close school one day. Haven't had a chance to watch the sledders yet but will when we get the chance. Love it.

  29. Pamela, what fun pics! They remind me of my Crazy Carpet days, sliding down snow covered school yard hills, in 1970s Toronto!

    Have a lovely week!

  31. A fun post with a nice story--love the way you took us to the distance view shots--and then the close up of the firewood. As close to being there as we could be. We may get 25 below in Arkansas tonight--that has not happened in the 17 years I have been living here.

  32. Beautiful Pamela, but I think I prefer the idea of staying by the fire and taking the photos than the actual sliding! The hot drinks sound lovely. Hope you had a great time, looks as though you did! xx

  33. This looks like the perfect winter day! I would love to do something like this! Hope you're staying warm. :)

  34. How fun! I would be huddled around the fire, sipping something hot, LOL.

  35. A sledding party! How fun is that. I'd go for a couple of slides then stand around the fire, warming my hands and insides with a mug of something hot. So glad you had sunshine!

  36. Your pictures are great and you make the winter look like fun. So nice to meet you at Sunlit Sunday and thanks for visiting. Hope you will stop by often.

  37. That looks like a lot of fun. I can kind of see my town setting something up like that, it would be a great idea!

  38. I'm so glad you've posted something fun about the snow and the cold Pamela.
Those children had the time of their life and will remember days like that forever!
The fire and steaming mugs of hot chocolate would have tempted me too and as you say it would be nice to get out in the fresh air after being cooped up for days.
We can get cabin fever on the boat after a couple of rainy days!
    Marvellous images thank you.
    Keep warm

  39. Hi Pamela! How brave of your to venture out into the snow and snap for us! How beautiful and I'll bet it was fun. We lived in New Mexico for 10 years and my neighbor used to get apple wood for her fireplace and it made the neighborhood smell wonderful!
Thanks for popping in to see me and you're always a sweetie,
    Shelia ;)

  40. I loved sledding when I was a child, but I have not attempted it in many years. I find the sun here very warm due to our high altitude, even when the air temperature is very cold, so outdoor activities are still possible.

    Happy and healthy 2014, Pamela!
