a trip to the mailbox

This past Saturday morning was so beautiful.  It was sunny and the temperature was warming up and the wind was light.  The deer have been on the move a lot now that there isn't as much snow on the fields.  I looked out the window and saw about 15 of them going across the hill.  This is their usual place to roam--all through the fields and woods up here on the ridge.

I went to the mailbox to pick up the newspaper and dressed warmly….  put on my down parka, big gum boots…. and put my camera around my neck.  I was going to see if I could get some deer pictures.

I walked up the road a short way and looked in a driveway to see these two deer looking at me.  They are part of the group that was walking across the hill.  There were more in the trees on the right.

Well, they high-tailed it outta there!   I guess my boots crunching on the ice snow along the roadside scared them.

Some more took off across the neighbouring farm field.

Since I was out and the deer had fled I thought I would get some scenic photos.

This is the other side of the hedgerow.  It's quite wet here and in spring there is a bit of a brook that flows from here under the road through a culvert and into a brook that goes down the hill.  I've seen wild forget-me-nots growing here before.

This is the field across the road from the brook.  The brook actually comes out at the other side of the trees on the right.

Another beautiful field and view towards the valley.  You can see that the brook crosses this field part way down.  I should walk down there in the spring and see what it looks like.  I've never done that.

And this is the next field over.  An animal has crossed here, perhaps a deer.

The groundhog did not see his shadow here in the Maritimes so we're in for an early spring.  Ha!  Don't believe that for one second.  I heard that we're in for an unseasonably cold February.   Oh well.  We know that winter weather will continue for the next 2 or 3 months here so I'm not holding my breath for spring weather and flowers shooting up.  We just have to take what comes.

Well, that was my trip to the mailbox at the end of our driveway.

I hope you all had a great weekend.  Did you get out and enjoy winter's beauty?  Did you take any photos?  I'll have more to share with you soon.

Blessings,

Pamela

  1. OK Pam...this looks so lovely...AND so cold. It reminded me of Maine with the fields of snow and those beautiful deer. I always think that is God's gift to us, when we see such beautiful animals. Lovely post my dear!

  4. Wow! You got to see so many deer and get some fabulous photos! It's so beautiful there and nice to get outside when the sun in shining. It is warm here right now....in the 80s, so we went for a 2 hour hike at a state park yesterday. We saw lots of deer tracks but didn't spot any. We did see lots of different birds and 2 amadillos though....they are so funny to watch. Enjoy your day my friend! Hugs!

  7. What a beautiful area to explore! It's always a treat to see deer. Winter is probably here till the end of March, no matter what any rodent has to say about it! I don't mind really, we get some wickedly hot and humid days come Summer here in Ontario.

  12. When I first read the title I thought you were going to post a letter, like Julia at ju-north said, my trip to mailbox to receive letters would be uneventful as it is in the front door so no getting dressed warmly or anything!! In fact today Harry was very disappointed that he saw the postman on the pavement near our drive and there were no letters so Postie didn't come up the drive and Harry loves to pick them up off the doormat.
Still flooding in some parts of the UK but so far no snow this Winter, thank goodness, although I am sure Harry would love it to snow.

I love the winter pictures they are a delight to take like yours. I just got a new camera but I had to go get a memory card so I had to use my smaller camera. Your pictures I love all.

  17. What fun to see all of the deer Pamela...we know that we get them in our backyard, but never see them. I can't believe how far you can see there...we are nestled into the side of a mountain, and ringed by mountains..so the views are different.

  18. I have just found you and really enjoyed seeing the lovely photos you took while you went to get your mail from the Mailbox. Loved seeing the deer in the fields. I see them here where I live in rural France. I can't wait to come back and see what you share. I have just signed up as a new follower.

  19. Your trip to the mailbox produced some really nice photos! I haven't been out with my camera in a long time. We still don't have many deer after the Blue Tongue and tough winter a couple years ago.

  20. Who knew a person could have such an eventful trip to the mailbox! Lovely scenes of the rippled snow surface and deer Pam. I feel this winter is going to drag on like last year, and this time even colder.

  24. Even I, who live in the midst of mountains of snow, know that is a beautiful sight. I love to see the deer scampering across the fields. AND I love the crunchy, squeaky sound that snow makes beneath my feet in this very cold weather!

  25. Beautiful shots Pamela. The deer are so graceful. And the snow-covered fields are very peaceful.

Gosh, I never heard that cold Feb rumour - good thing we still have 5 rows of wood left!!

  26. Great, great photos. The most wildlife we see here is pigeons, not my favorite. Your photos are lovely. Keep cozy!

  27. Beautiful photos! The drab brown that normally makes deer difficult to see any other time works against them in the snow.

  34. Pamela...and a beautiful trip it was! All of those deer against the backdrop of the white snow...oh my! What is it about deer? Every time I see one, it's like seeing it for the first time...such lovely creatures. Well, your trip to the mailbox was certainly certainly worth it whether you had any mail in box or not!

  40. Pamela,

Despite the crunch of your boots, you STILL managed to snap some amazing photos of these beautiful deer! What spectacular landscapes around your parts; I am always recharged looking at the wide open spaces, the vastness of the fields and the forests that border them! Walking to one's mailbox has never been such an adventure!
