it's a holiday weekend in Canada

It's the Victoria Day holiday weekend with Monday as a statutory holiday in honour and memory of Queen Victoria.

Murray took today, Friday, off for a 4 day weekend but we aren't going anywhere.  We have too much to do around here plus it's going to rain for half the holiday weekend.  Today was gorgeous - sunny and warm at 24C.  I started the day with a walk at Mactaquac Provincial Park with two friends.  I haven't walked much at all for months so the one hour walk was almost painful.  :)

This is one of the golf fairways I think and the club house is up the slope in the centre of the picture.  In the winter this is a sliding hill where the grass is yellowed.

After our walk we went to Grey's Greenhouse - our local plant grower.  The greenhouses are amazing and seeing the colour sure was wonderful.

I only looked today.  Next weekend I hope to buy!!

Even the view behind the greenhouses is beautiful!  Can you see the green in the tree tops?

Murray and I, well mostly Murray, have been working on the lot all week in the evenings.  We raked rocks, and more rocks, and spread grass seed.  Then we staked out the vegetable garden plot tonight.  It's going to be 22' x 54.5'.  Do you think it will be big enough?  I don't know what we're going to plant yet but I sure hope the deer stay away!  Murray helped our neighbours today and they helped us.  It was a great day but we are so tired and sore.

A friend of ours built me a bluebird house so Murray got it up on a pole tonight.  I had to have it done so the birds could find it and get nesting!  So, one last thing before we came in the house was to put this up.

Here it is attached to a tree stump.  He used an old antenna pole and bolted it down.  I think it's raccoon proof but I might buy a baffle to prevent them or squirrels from trying to climb up.  I've never had a bluebird box before so I'm pretty excited to see if they will come.  I will let you know and hopefully get pictures!

And.  The perfect end to a perfect day.

Saturday will be nice for a while but then the rain will come in and it will be cooler.  I hope my Canadian friends have a wonderful, fun and safe holiday weekend.

Blessings,

Pam

  2. Pace yourselves, People! Oh my. I worry about you folks that do so much. Save some time for a little fun or a BBQ or something. Do you have Epsom Salts? They feel mighty good on tired muscles with a good soak in the tub. Course, one has to get down in the tub and back up from the tub. Forget it. A shower's just as good. LOL!

  3. It would be so tempting to go into a greenhouse as well stocked as the one you visited. That is going to be a big veggie garden, I'm sure all your hard work will pay off with yummy veggies. We had rain, rain, rain for most of this week but hopefully there won't be much this weekend but the temperatures are to be below normal. Enjoy the long weekend.

  7. Every time I go to a nursery I begin to imagine my gardens filled with the colorful plants! It is always hard to make the choices. I do hope a sweet bird family will move into the new home!

  8. So glad that everything is greening up out your way. That's a big garden plot! I hope you're fencing it off from the deer - they are renowned for eating everything in sight here. A long walk in the fresh air is great - hope you won't be too sore. These days, when I go out into the garden, I have a hard time getting back into the house. It's just so nice outside.
    Happy Victoria Day weekend!

  9. I hope the bluebirds come. We went to a garden centre yesterday, and I noticed they had bird houses around the place. I didn't think there would be any birds, as the centre is busy, but there were several with young in them.

  11. We're not doing much either Pam, except today I'm off to a fairy gardening event with my daughter and granddaughter. There was frost on the grass this morning when I walked the dog - Brrr!
I did buy my annuals yesterday and planted them, everything survived at least. Hopefully you'll get a family of bluebirds, won't it be nice to photograph them and share.

  12. Have a great weekend Pamela.
Last weekend Phil and I visited Osborne House on the Isle of Wight. It was Victoria and Albert's holiday home.

It was pouring with rain so we never got to the beach nearby to the house to see Victoria's bathing machine but we did walk to The Swiss Cottage, which was delightful and where the children played:- http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/daysout/properties/osborne/swiss-cottage/
When I have time I must compose and post a blog on our visit.
Isle of Wight was also a favourite place of Alfred Lord Tennyson and other artists, poets and writers.

Enjoy the weekend, we have a Bank holiday next Monday 26th and it is half term for schools that week too.
Love from a lovely day here in the UK, Jackie.x

  19. It seems there is so much to be done at this time of year, particularly if you like to garden. Sometimes it can be hard not to over do.
Your garden plot looks large and full of potential. I look forward to seeing what you decide to grow.
We currently have baby bluebirds in our nest box. It seems once they find the box, they return every year. We have enjoyed watching them for several years now.
    Enjoy your long weekend.

  20. Doesn't it feel good to get out in the dirt and play? You will fill up your garden, or rather what you plant will fill up,the space. Mid summer it will be abundant.

  22. Happy Victoria Day to you, too, Pamela! We are expecting a similar weekend to yours, here in Victoria. Rain is forecast and it is very cloudy at 0830. That's alright, though, as we need the rain after a very hot and sunny week.

  25. I hope that you have a wonderful weekend, that the weather is kind to you and that you get all you need to done! I don't think that you were worn out after your walk because of the walk by the way, I think it was from digging over your great veggie plot! It looks as though it was a lot of work, I hope that you enjoy lots of lovely veg from it after all of your labours! xx

  27. That sounds like a very nice start to the long weekend. I'm sure your garden will yield yummy things aplenty. We also spent our Saturday digging. We're in the midst of some diy landscaping and it's hard work.

  30. Hi Pamela, Your pictures are truly wonderful. They seem so bright and clear. Maybe they always were and my new lenses are finally working!! Your garden is going to be nice. I know you will enjoy all the veggies. I hope the deer stay out of our garden, too. I heard that we need to plant some marigolds in the garden because the deer shy away from them...So I know Jim is buying some. It is very pretty around your home and all the places you take your walks. Enjoy the sunshine!

    Blessings,
    Susannah
