picture postcards from the Canadian Rockies

On Saturday we headed out to visit Banff and Lake Louise.  It was cold and partly sunny and we drove through a bit of snow here and there.  The roads were very slick with a dusting of snow on them as the traffic had packed it down.  We took our time.  They use sand grit on the roads here but not salt.  When cars pass you the rocks fly up and hit your car.  I, of course, jumped every time one hit the car!  It's a scary thing but they are so used to it that it doesn't bother them.  Cracked windshields and dents in the vehicle are a common thing.  :)

The views were like picture postcards.  The mountain tops laden with snow and the trees with a dusting of fresh powder were so beautiful.  Enjoy!

The Trans Canada Highway to Banff.

This is the entrance to the Banff National Park.  We paid for a Family Day Pass and drove on through.

This car had slid off of the highway and we saw a transport truck sitting on the median in the deep snow a short way up the road.  It was too slippery to travel fast as a lot of vehicles were.  No one was hurt in this accident.

Castle Mountain was caught up in the clouds over it's summit.

There are many of these tunnel overpasses along the highway.  There are fences all along the sides of the woods along the highway to keep the elk, bear and wolves off the highway.  These bridges are for the animals to use to get from one area to another without being a danger to vehicle traffic.  The roads were drier along this stretch.

We are just about to Lake Louise and I'll be back with more photos of that iconic tourist spot soon.

I hope you enjoyed the drive along the highway through the Canadian Rockies.  I was so glad that we went on this day trip.
It was so spectacular to see the beautiful mountains with the snow and the bright blue sky.  Even the clouds were beautiful.

I hope you all have a great week.  We head home tomorrow which makes me sad as I will miss my family here so much.  It's just too long between visits.

See  you soon.

Blessings,

Pamela

  10. Beautiful photos, Pamela. There is a lot more snow than when we were there a month ago. I'm glad you stayed cautious and were safe on the roads. Enjoy these last hours of your visit with your dear ones. It's hard to be so far apart. Safe travels home.

  15. Stunning scenery Pamela - thank you so much for sharing. I've only visited there in Summer when it looked so different, but of course still beautiful. Love Banff, and saw a small avalanche at Lake Louise on one visit.
The bridges for the the traveling wildlife are interesting - I didn't recall seeing them.

Safe journey home - I know you had fun but it's always good to get home again!
    Hugs - Mary

Your mountain photos are breath taking, Pamela.
I can see why you chanced the drive even with the scary roads.
    Safe travels home, my friend!

  18. Wonderful pictures! Brings back great memories of family trips years ago. I think we paid $55.00 for tea and muffins in the chateau at Lake Louise while a squirrel ran in and out the back door of the restaurant. Hope to get back out west before too long.

  21. Absolutely breathtaking photos and it sure is hard to leave family when you know you won't see them again for a while but how fortunate you were able to spend time together...it's been over three years that I've seen my daughter and I'm hoping another year won't go by before I get to hug her and spend time with her.

  22. Incredibly beautiful! I love the wildlife bridges! Sad that you have to leave your family - it's so hard when they live far away. xo Karen

  25. Hello Pamela, These photos are striking. I knew it was beautiful but it is very beautiful! I am so glad you were able to see the area. I think it was my sweet Mother and wonderful step father that went to Lake Louise and..... then I think.... or was it that they wanted to go to Lake Louise and because Mom got sick with cancer so....they never went. It is irritating me so that I can not remember the details of this. I will ask my sister.

I am looking so forward to some more of your beautiful pictures. They are very fascinating.

I imagine you are back home today. Try to be strong. I know it is hard.

    Blessings,
    Susannah

  29. The photos are spectqcular. Did you see any wildlife along the way? My parents traveled to Lake Louise many years ago and loved the beauty of the Canadian Rocky Mountains.

  30. The rockies are gorgeous Pam, but the treacherous roads don't sound so nice. I read the part about rocks hitting the cars to Glenn and he just shook his head. No winter trips for us out west with flying rocks. LOL

  31. Absolutely gorgeous photos - and very worthy of being on postcards! I know what you mean about long time in between visits. As a rule, we only get to fly to Alaska once a year in June to see our daughter and her family. Our two little granddaughters are so precious. One will be 3 in April, the other is going on 6 months old. We were up there twice last year - once in June and went back for Christmas so we could see the new baby and their new home.

  34. How beautiful your photos are Pamela. The only mountains I have seen were in BC and they were spectacular. Hubby saw the Rockies from the sky when we flew over them. I'm sure you have enjoyed your visit and it's always sad to leave for home. It is too long between visits, I know. Have a safe trip back home.

    Blessings,
    Sandi
